What is a photofacial?

Photofacials (also called IPL photofacials or intense pulsed light photofacials) use focused, broad-spectrum light to help stimulate the skin's natural healing and tissue regeneration processes so skin looks refreshed and rejuvenated. It's often used in women and men with sun damage, uneven skin tone, rosacea, hyperpigmentation and enlarged pores, but it can be used in other patients to help skin achieve a healthier, more youthful glow.

What is the procedure like?

During each photofacial session, light energy is delivered using a special handheld device. As light reaches the deeper layers of tissue, the energy is absorbed, stimulating the generation of new, healthy cells as well as the production of collagen and elastin. Because light is focused on these deeper layers, the surface of the skin is untouched so there is no risk of superficial tissue damage. Most treatments take from 15 minutes to a half hour.

What kind of results can I expect?

Photofacials help skin appear more evenly toned and refreshed with a smoother, softer feel and appearance. They can also help decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as enlarged pores for a more refined texture overall. The results of each session are subtle, building over time as the production of new, healthy skin cells continues and as collagen production ramps up.

What is the recovery like?

Recovery following a photofacial is simple. There is no downtime, and most patients experience only a little redness that resolves soon afterward. 

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients find they can achieve optimal benefits with four to six treatments spaced about four weeks apart. The doctors at the Dermatology & Laser Center of San Diego will evaluate your skin to develop a treatment schedule that's ideal for your skin and your objectives.
